Hunger stone and water point in Děčín
Details project
For the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute we scanned the so-called „hunger stone“ and flood markers in Děčín.
A hunger stone is a stone that can only be seen when the water level in the river is very low. In the past, this heralded the arrival of drought and the associated crop failure and hunger.
On the stone are marked the individual years and the levels the river reached in those years.
The purpose of the scanning was to capture the current state of the stone for research purposes (to see if there are any marks on it that are not visible to the eye) and also to preserve it for future generations, because there is a dam planned for the river, which, if it is built, will mean that the stone will end up underwater forever.
In contrast, flood markers on the rock below the castle depict the years and levels in the years of the floods.
